Will my car insurance cover me when I rent a car

Question

Generally, coverage from your primary auto insurance will extend to a rental vehicle. If you cause an accident while driving the rental, your liability insurance would pay up to your policy limits for the damages to other cars or property.

To make sure you get covered, you must charge your entire car rental on your credit card and decline the supplemental collision damage coverage offered by the rental company. If you sign up for that insurance, you won’t be covered by the credit card company.

In the continental United States your New York State auto insurance policy is going to cover you if there is an accident with a rental car.

Important to remember, you must have auto insurance in New York State and you must be renting the car in the United States. Other states and other parts of the world this may not necessarily be true.

If you are traveling outside of the United States I always highly recommend you look for another option like the local coverage or your credit card may have an option.
