According to the 2000 Census, New Mexico’s population was 1,819,046; ten years later it reached 2,096,829, an increase of 11.9 percent.

Of New Mexico’s residents, 51.4 percent were born in the state; 37.9 percent were born in another state; 1.1 percent were born in Puerto Rico, on U.S. islands, or abroad of American parents; and 9.7 percent were born abroad.

As of May 1, 2010, 7.5 percent of New Mexico’s population was under the age of 5, 25 percent under the age of 18, and 13 percent aged 65 or older.

As of 2000, 8% of the state’s residents were foreign-born.

Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics, 47% (as of July 1, 2012).

This classification includes people from a wide variety of cultures and historical backgrounds, including descendants of Spanish colonists with deep roots in the region, as well as recent immigrants from various Latin American countries, each with its own culture.

According to the United States Census Bureau’s Model Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, the number of persons living in poverty increased from 2000 to 400,779 (19.8 percent of the population) in 2010.

At that time, the estimated number of persons living in poverty was 309,193 (17.3% of the population). According to the most recent data available for 2014, the number of people living in poverty is 420,388 (20.6% of the population).
