Cranberry juice is a liquid of cranberry fruit, usually made to contain sugar, water and other fruit juices.
Cranberry, a fruit native to North America, is recognized for its bright red color, tart flavor and versatility for making the product.
Why Cranberry Juice Is Good For You
You may have heard that drinking cranberry juice can help with urinary tract infections (UTIs), but that’s not the only benefit, it also used to treat upset stomach and liver problems.
Cranberries are packed with nutrients that can help your body prevent infections and improve your overall health.
Cranberries grow in marshes and are often collected in water.
When the berries are ripe and ready to be picked, they float in the water.
Being on the surface of the water, they are exposed to more sunlight. This can increase their nutritional value.
Like most fruits, you get the highest level of nutrition when you eat cranberries whole. But the juice is still full of benefits.
Good source of vitamin C and E
Unsweetened, pure cranberry juice is a good source of both vitamin C and vitamin E. It is also a decent source of several other vitamins and minerals, including:
- vitamin C: 26% of the daily value
- vitamin E: 20% of the daily value
- copper: 15% of the daily value
- vitamin K1: 11% of the daily value
- vitamin B6: 8% of the daily value
Vitamin C and E are strong antioxidants that play an important role in overall health.
Preventing urinary tract infections
Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, a class of compounds commonly found in plants.
It is thought that these compounds can help prevent UTIs by preventing bacteria from sticking to the lining of the urinary tract.
If the bacteria can’t grow and spread, the infection can’t develop.
Unfortunately, research on cranberry juice has been mixed.
Some studies show that cranberry juice is effective in reducing the risk of UTIs, while others have found that it is not an effective treatment.
More research is still needed to determine the exact benefits.
The same compounds that help protect the heart also improve the digestive system.
This is important because when Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) gets out of control, stomach ulcers can form.
Animal studies show that antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory substances in cranberries may also provide protection against colon cancer. However, it is unlikely that cranberry juice has the same effect.
Cranberry juice can be a healthy part of your diet and even help protect against certain health issues.
